The latest report on mobile banking apps, conducted by Sia, a Paris-based international management consulting firm, highlights a significant achievement for traditional banks in Asia. The comprehensive study, available here, assessed 140 apps across 22 markets, using a detailed set of 95 criteria, and found that DBS Bank’s mobile app in Singapore leads in Asia, securing the top position and ranking 11th worldwide.

The report placed HSBC Holdings’ Hong Kong app and mainland China’s Ping An Pocket Bank in a tie for second in Asia, both achieving a global ranking of 16th. Meanwhile, two digital lenders, Mox Bank from Hong Kong and Trust Bank from Singapore, tied for fourth in Asia. Sia’s study reveals that while traditional banks like DBS and HSBC excel in functionality due to their extensive experience, digital banks like Mox and Trust Bank offer a superior user experience although they lag in functionality.

Floris Delecluse, a senior consultant at Sia, pointed out that criteria for the study change annually, preventing direct historical comparisons. However, the findings are indicative of a competitive mobile banking landscape in Asia, with Hong Kong and Singapore being significant players despite facing challenges when compared to Western counterparts who integrate partner services more effectively into their apps.
