In a statement to Newsweek, a Zelle spokesperson said, “We are aware that certain Zelle users at some financial institutions are not able to use Zelle at this time. This situation involves an independent third-party that provides services to particular financial institutions. We are working diligently with our partners to resolve this matter as soon as we can. Zelle users may see transactions marked as ‘payment pending’ in the meantime. We will share updates as more information becomes available.”
Zelle told CNN on Friday that the issue is linked to a third-party, Fiserv, which specializes in areas such as payment processing, digital banking, core account processing systems, risk management and data analytics.
Just after 4 p.m. Friday, Fiserv told CNN that an “internal issue that temporarily disrupted service” has now been resolved. Fiserv said it’s working to process the backlog of Zelle payments.
What is Zelle?
Zelle is a digital payment service that allows users to send and receive money quickly and securely using just an email address or mobile phone number. It’s designed for person-to-person (P2P) payments and is commonly used for splitting bills, paying rent, or reimbursing friends and family.
Zelle is integrated directly into the mobile banking apps of many major U.S. banks, including Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and others, allowing money to be transferred almost instantly between bank accounts. Unlike some other payment platforms, Zelle does not charge fees to send or receive money. However, it only works with U.S. bank accounts and isn’t meant for business or international transfers.
